I will be there to answer further questions as will Femke.

Wednesday workshops will be used to review your work in progress, so please make sure you have something to share - whether it is a video documentation of your project tests, or an animation of what the final project will appear like. You will be graded on what you show on Wednesday, and you must show something.

Those students that did not present their work this past Monday, and the ones that did not submit their full research, or storyboards we will be expecting everything on Monday - printed and bound. If you delay submitting your research and proposals past Monday we will be docking your grades.

What's Expected on May 8th

**NOTE*** Lectures only take place on Mondays, while Workshops and WorkGroups are on Mondays and Wednesdays. There is no lecture on Wednesday.

Assignment 3: Your AVV is Due on the Monday following your holiday. Prepare to present your projects concepts and make appointments with Femke and I for feedback on your ideas and progress. Take more photos and or videos of your site. Research never stops on these types of projects. Get Obsessed with your site. You need your BACKGROUND RESEARCH and PROJECT CONCEPT. We are not yet expecting the content, that will be expected in the last week of class.
I want your research and concept materials printed and assembled into a presentation folder and submitted online in both yours and your partner's blogs.

We are expecting to see for your background research:
1. Survey Data
2. Videos or photography of your site at different times of day and several different days.
3. History of the place.

For your concept we want to see:
1. Storyboards, Illustrations, Photo Mock-ups or Animations of how your concept will impact the space.
2. 2-3 user scenarios for the space of your final project are required as well. Describe in words and in a story of the average visitors and how they would react to your concept, and how the improvements/changes/etc that you come up with effect them directly.

Things to think about/Keep in the back of your minds at this stage:
What was the original purpose/function of this space, and how can your idea enhance that?
How does the data affect our design decisions, and how does your idea change the space? How is your idea contributing to agora like behaviour, and how would you attract sponsors? How can your content be seamlessly integrated into a corporate sponsor's needs as well as the people's needs? Can you think of themes that encompass all sides? Can you make the screen a two-way communication device (with or without technology)? Can you extend it to the people’s personal screens? Is interactivity a vital enhancement to the project or unnecessary for this particular location? Imagine designing and proposing this project to the government or corporate sponsor as if it were to actually take place(because it might!).

Student Blogs

Arjan Walstra http://194159.blogspot.com/
Andrew Karijodimedjo http://karijo07.blogspot.com/
Anne-Marijn Bogers http://annemarijn.blogspot.com/
Arnaud Ronquillo http://insertspace.blogspot.com/
Bas Helderman http://cimbas.blogspot.com/
Christian de Wit http://www.chris-publicspace.blogspot.com/
Christian Gravemaker http://chri82s.blogspot.com/
Daniel van Breda http://danielvanbreda.blogspot.com/
Dennis van Hollhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifand http://dennisvanholland.blogspot.com/
Do Jacobson http://dojacobson.blogspot.com/
Eric Holm http://www.ericholm.blogspot.com/
Esther Dhooge http://esther-cim.blogspot.com/
Falco Huizinga http://public-falco.blogspot.com/
Guus Turkenburg http://g-iam.blogspot.com/
H.J. LUECK

Of all the images from the 1970's and 1980's of a city out of control,
perhaps none is etched more deeply into the public consciousness than
that
of the graffiti-covered subway train screeching into a station, every
inch
of its surface covered with a rich patina of spray-painted slashes and
scrawls.

It took decades of work and millions of dollars to clean up the trains.
But
now officials are seeing a fresh surge of subway graffiti, in which
windows
are irreparably damaged with acid. Raising the specter of the bad old
days,
transit officials are vowing to fight a problem they say is even more
menacing than the graffiti of decades past.

"Not on my watch are we going to have what John Lindsay had when he was
mayor," said Barry L. Feinstein, the chairman of the Transit Committee
of
the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, referring to the mayor who
came
into office in 1966 just as the craze for marking subway cars with
slogans,
gang names and signatures — known as "tags" — hit its stride.

"I've seen it on every line, on almost every train," said Andrew B.
Albert,
chairman of the New York City Riders Council, a state-sponsored
advocacy
group, who said the acid-based graffiti first appeared on subway
windows
about six months ago. Mr. Albert is a nonvoting member of the Transit
Committee, which met yesterday.

He said the most common material used by the new breed of graffiti
vandals
is Armor Etch-All, an etching acid sold in art supply stores that is
used by
craftspeople to etch into glass or other materials. To create graffiti
with
the acid, it is mixed with paint or shoe polish, Mr. Albert said. And
when
applied to subway windows, it most commonly leaves broad, sweeping,
indelible marks, which subway crews cannot remove in subway yards, as
they
do with painted graffiti.

Transit officials said that most subway windows are vulnerable and pose
an
expensive problem because they cost up to $130 each to replace. Only
the
newest of subway cars, acquired since about 2000, are resistant to the
new
generation of graffiti, because their windows are protected with Mylar,
a
plastic coating that can be peeled off and replaced.

Charles F. Seaton, a spokesman for New York City Transit, the arm of
the
transportation authority that oversees the subways, said yesterday that
one
option being explored is to apply Mylar coating to all subway car
windows,
but that the cost and effectiveness had not been determined.

Lawrence G. Reuter, the president of New York City Transit, told Mr.
Feinstein's committee that his staff would report next month on how the
subway cars were being defaced and what could be done about it.

Mr. Feinstein instructed transit officials to find out whether the
etching
acid posed a hazard to riders, as well as windows. Anyone who touches
it
before it is embedded in glass or dries could be burned, he said.

Mr. Albert said he knew of no cases of riders being burned, but the
hazard
may be serious because the current graffiti vandals tend to make their
marks
on trains that are in service. Their predecessors in the 1970's were
more
likely to sneak into subway yards and deface stationary trains when no
passengers were nearby.

Another difference is that the new subway graffiti usually looks like a
crude scrawl, rather than the detailed writing or representational art
that
was common in the graffiti of years past and has shown up again on the
sides
of buildings from Williamsburg to the South Bronx. The crude
etching-acid
graffiti is also easily distinguished from the messages that vandals
have
long carved into subway windows using knives or sharp objects.

The city's resurgent graffiti problem, on buildings as well as subways,
has
not escaped the notice of City Hall. In December, Mayor Michael R.
Bloomberg
signed into law a ban on possession of "graffiti instruments,"
including
etching acid, by anyone under 21. Besides etching acid, the ban covers
such
things as aerosol paint and broad-tipped indelible markers, which are
used
by graffiti vandals on buildings.

Opponents of the city ban have said it infringes on freedom of speech.
Yesterday, according to The Associated Press, a lawyer said he would
file
suit today in federal court in Manhattan to challenge the ban as
"overly
broad." The lawyer, Daniel Perez, said he was representing seven high
school
and college students who are supported by Marc Ecko, a fashion
designer.

Mr. Albert said that volunteers with his group would conduct spot
checks at
art supply stores across the city to see if merchants are promoting
sales of
the etching acid.

"We want to see if it is right out there on the counter," he said.

Lecture Two, Workshop Two, Links and Class Blogs

Hi all,
You can download the PDF file of today's lecture here. It exists on the Harvard Business School campus, Boston, Mass. The Chapel is a soothing sanctuary that holds non-denominational services, celebrations, and concerts. Identified by its cylindrical main building and adjacent glass pyramid with tiered garden, the Chapel also houses an intricately designed pond and is a popular spot for students seeking a moment of solitude and quiet. Throughout the year, free music concerts are performed here for the HBS community. It does not get much traffic, and in fact functions as it was intended - a quiet place on the campus for reflection. Many times students go here to read or to sit in the sun. It is a place that I like very much because it brings the outdoors inside with the plants and water.

Assignment 1

Assignment 1: Profile a Place.

For the first week of class you will be required to identify what you find to be a public space in Amsterdam or nearby. Write a brief, one page description and create a visual representation. The representation can be in the form of images (3 maximum), video (1 min. max), or any other visual medium to accompany your text. Your site may also just be a piece of public art, but you will be asked to speak about the area where it is placed. We will briefly review each space in the class lab time in order to generate discussions about public space. This is due to me on April 24 (posted on your blog) and presented on April 26th (bring a copy on disk to class).

Week One Readings

Please make sure to read these...they are short and important to setting the framework for the class.

Excerpts from
A Handbook for Creating Successful Public Spaces (PPS) and The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces by William H. Adding an informational layer to these already existing gathering places should enhance and add to their roles already of bringing people together. Well designed successful social spaces are rare and we begin the course by documenting some better examples and projects.

Learning Outcomes:
Understanding public space is the first step towards designing content and applications for it.
1) Students will be introduced to a methodology of understanding public space and as well as a methodology of the design process.
2) Examining existing public spaces and their agendas is the first step in this process.
3) Researching and knowing who your audience is also essential.
4) Considerations of the different ways public space can be defined [material, social, networked etc] will also be covered.
5) Exploring economic factors surrounding content creation and creative presentations in public spaces will also be explored and the student will be asked to rely on his own interdisciplinary skills to make the project come together.
6) Finally, the student will leave the course with research skills, theoretical and practical information, as well as project sketches and video content for future projects.

Course Requirements:
Reading Writing and Discussion
Reading Materials will be posted online for self-printing and supplemental reading may be handed out in class as hard copies. You are responsible for keeping up with the reading and preparing for discussions in the next class or workshop. You are also responsible for checking the posted links and references that will be uploaded to the blog along with the lecture notes. Occasional written responses will also be required to be posted online in your class blog. When handing in anything that is referenced either from the web, an article or a book, please cite your sources.

Working with Technology:
A class website and blog will be available for your use. You will be required to check the links pertaining to each week’s lecture and download the readings. You will also be required to start a blogger account and fill out a profile as well as submit some of your assignments online. Class lectures and supplemental material will be made available as well from time to time.
Software tutorials in video editing, graphics programs and animation will be scheduled for the last weeks of the course.

Organization of the Course:
Lectures will be held for the first 4 weeks where we will explore definitions of public space and uses of design in public space. After that the next 4 weeks will be dedicated to individual projects for a site of your choosing using an urban screen for some percentage of community, entertainment, informational, artistic or commercial content. This mixed use content will need to tie together and also be prototyped in a model since it is not always possible or practical to do an onsite project.

Final Assignment: The Urban Screen
This is a group project, working in teams of 2 or 3.
Design a mixed-use project using an urban screen for 40% Performance, 30% Commercial and 30% Informational/community based content (or some alternate percentage as you like) for any public space of your choice. What are the main goals in designing for this type of environment? What are some special considerations of your chosen site and how does your content and display deal with it. Your research on the use of the site must also be reflected in your design. Can you make the screen a two-way communication device (with or without technology)? Can you extend it to the people’s personal screens? Is interactivity a vital enhancement to the project or unnecessary for this particular location? Imagine designing and proposing this project to the government or corporate sponsor as if it were to actually take place.

The final project must include the following:
1. Video mock up or documentary of your project in action or as it appears in-situ.
2. Content reel: 3-5 minute reel of your content showing the mixed use.
3. Research: survey data, videos or photography of your site at different times of day and several different days.
4. Final Presentation: The presentation should start with the site as you found it and your explanation of why you came up with the idea. In some cases, the idea can be demonstrated in the actual intended space or projected using the beamer.

Evaluation Criteria:

Punctual and regular class attendance.
Level of participation in class discussions and class activities.
Quality and timeliness of assignments.
Ability to work well in teams or solo.
Creativity of final prototype.
Participation with your blog.

The final project will be assessed on the above factors and of creating a seamless mixed-use platform as well as for the design value of the content. Considerations for environmental blending and financial support will also be assessed. Some final projects of high quality may be submitted to conferences. More information will be provided later.

Course Schedule:

April 19 Week 1: Introductions and Course Information.
Lecture: What is public space?

Assignment 1: Profile a Place. For the first week of class you will be required to identify what you find to be a public space in Amsterdam or nearby. Write a brief, one page description and create a visual representation. The representation can be in the form of images (3 maximum), video (1 min. max), or any other visual medium to accompany your text. Your site may also just be a piece of public art, but you will be asked to speak about the area where it is placed. We will briefly review each space in the class lab time in order to generate discussions about public space. This is due to me on April 24 (posted on your blog) and presented on April 26th (bring a copy on disk to class).

Assignment 1b: Your Bio. Start Blogger account.
Please open an account and fill out the complete profile with your photo. I also want the phonetic pronunciation of your name. Please include this in the “about me section”. Also tell me why you want to study interactive media. This should be posted by April 20th by 5pm. Please fill out every question.

Readings: Please see class website.

April 19 Workshop 1: User centered design principles for the public sphere. Understanding your audience. An introduction to user scenarios. I will show you examples of user scenarios in class when designing for public space or even for advertising - they can be used for illustrating your ideas and for general research before you formulate your idea. We will also view “The Park” video which shows some interview techniques.

In class exercise (2nd half of class): Break into groups of 4 or 5 and choose one site on campus to interview people about how they use that space. Bring back the data to create some user scenario projections for a) working professional b) a family c) a couple of students or come up with a design to improve the space you just looked at. What are their different needs and expectations? Be as accurate as you can and write one paragraph each. These will be collected at the end of class.

April 24 Week 2: Lecture: Exploring Public Interventions of Sponsorship and Commercial Uses of Urban Screens

We will see installation art examples, Site Specific Installations, Grafitti Art and discuss how art and design are involved in many commercial projects. An Introduction to Different themes to approach the space: Fear/Control – The Virtual – Privatisation – Paid for – Nature – Interactivity.

Assignment 2: Storyboards & Final Concept. Plan of Action for the Final Project due next week. Storyboards and 3 user scenarios for the space of your final project are required as well as your raw data from the survey provided (posted on class site), please work on this and add it to your plan of action. Make sure to include photographs or video of your site at different times of the day and also on different days (weekend vs. during the week). How does the data affect our design decisions, and how has your idea changed?

Readings: Please check the class website.

April 24 WorkGroup Session 1: Design Styles, Materials and Examples.
